Mercy Medical Center - Mason City

REFERRAL PROCESS FOR MIDLANDS CHOICE - ALL SERVICES RENDERED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF IOWA HOSPITAL & CLINICS, MAYO CLINIC ASSOCIATED HOSPITAL/PROVIDERS AS WELL AS OTHER NON-NETWORK PROVIDERS WILL REQUIRE AN APPROVED REFERRAL

Mercy Medical Center associates are required to obtain an approved referral prior to having services at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, the Mayo Clinic hospital/physicians in Rochester or Alert Lea, MN and any other non-network providers.

Please make sure your physician is aware: A procedure or service that is available or can be performed at Mercy Medical Center - North Iowa or another network facility will result in non-network benefit reimbursement for a facility/clinic charge at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics.

If an associate or family member is referred to the University of Iowa for services, the referring physician will need to contact Aetna at 1-866-632-3862 prior to services being obtained. Aetna will work with the provider to determine if the service(s) can be performed in-network and if so, member may be directed to do so. Referrals for emergency situations will be reviewed upon receipt at Aetna (except for weekends or off hours). Non-emergency referrals will be reviewed within 48 hours of receipt at Aetna.

Referrals approved for the University of Iowa Hospitals/Clinics will be paid at the in-network or PPO level. If a referral is not approved and the employee/family member still chooses to have services at the University of Iowa Hospitals/Clinics, these services will be paid at the non-network or non-PPO level.

For additional information on the referral process, please contact Aetna at 1-800-544-5108. Again - an approved referral is required prior to obtaining services at the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics. Failure to obtain an approved referral from Aetna will result in benefits being paid at the non-network or non-PPO level.
